How A Neurosurgeon Can Help With Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson ‘s disease is a motor system disorder that results from the loss of dopamine-producing cells in the brain. Dopamine is a chemical that controls movement in the body, and the loss of these cells causes the symptoms of Parkinson’s such as tremors, slowed movements, stiffness in the limbs and trunk, and difficulty with balance. Yet there is hope. By meeting with a neurosurgeon, different options may be available to help reduce the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s Disease Treatment

  • Prescription Medications for Parkinson’s. As the disease progresses, the symptoms of Parkinson’s can make daily tasks difficult. Although there is no cure for Parkinson’s, many patients can find relief from symptoms with certain medications prescribed by their physician. A board-certified neurosurgeon can perform an examination and discuss symptoms in order to find the best course of treatment.
  • Surgery for Parkinson’s Disease. If medications are not providing adequate symptom relief, a state-of-the-art surgery known as Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) may be performed by a neurosurgeon that specializes in this advanced procedure. DBS treats the motor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s, and can significantly reduce many of its debilitating effects. DBS may enable a patient to reduce his or her medication dosage, which in turn can reduce unwanted side effects from the medications. Not all Parkinson’s patients are good candidates for DBS, but typically those who see some improvement with medication can also experience greater improvement after the DBS procedure.

The DBS procedure is similar to having a pacemaker implanted. A thin electrode wire is inserted into a predetermined area of the brain, and sends pulses to block unwanted signals from Parkinson’s. The wire is connected to a small battery-operated device that is typically inserted into the shoulder or chest area. The electrical signals can also be adjusted to provide maximum efficacy, and because it does not damage the brain, it can be surgically removed, if necessary.

After surgery, patients should see significant relief of Parkinson’s symptoms. Patients typically go home within 48 hours and need to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities for several weeks.
